Classes at Purl Patchwork: Spring Schedule

Three variations of "Skirts That Work" made from a single custom sloper!

SKIRTS THAT WORK

In this class, students will make a "skirt sloper" based on their own measurements, and learn how to use it as a template to create a wide variety of skirt styles. This is a great class for sewers who have successfully sewn basic garments and who want to learn more about designing and making clothing for themselves. Also a great introduction to zippers! More information, including dates and registration here.

Smocked Sundresses, long and short versions

SMOCKED SUNDRESSES

This popular project is back! Learn how to use elasticized thread to create a simple sundress with a smocked bodice. One simple pattern can be used to make a long chic party dress and a simple short beach cover-up... plus everything in between. Class fee includes free pattern. sign up and registration here.

A monogram rendered in simple "Lazy Daisy" pattern, as taught in Modern Trousseau With Heather Ross at Purl Patchwork.

MODERN TROUSSEAU

This class is fast becoming a Purl Soho Favorite. Students design their own simple embroidered monogram (It doesn't have to be a letter of the alphabet, it can be anything!) and learn the basic skills necessary to make and embellish a set of cocktail or dinner napkins. More info here.

Weekend Sewing Workshops & New Classes at Purl Patchwork

Smocked Sundress and Pencil Skirt (from "Skirts That Work"), both projects taught at Purl Patchwork this spring!Lets face it, sewing can be a bit solitary. Sewing Workshops, on the other hand, are an absolute hoot.  I will be teaching lots of fun classes in the coming months, so I have added a "workshops" link in the column to the right, and will be updating it accordingly.

I have been teaching at Purl Patchwork in Soho since I moved to new York and am still instantly inspired every time I walk through the door. My students there are some of the most fascinating and diverse women I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, many friendships (and even a blind date or two) have originated in my weeknight classes there. I am teaching four classes this spring, listed below, including one brand new one and a few old favorites.

I have long coveted the enormous fantastic Bridgeport, CT studio of my dear friend Denyse Schmidt, so when she asked me to come and teach a one-day workshop there I said yes before she finished the sentence. Turns out that if I was on the fence she was going to offer to make me bacon. I should have held out for that. This class will be all about sewing simple summer dresses and is geared towards Weekend Sewing readers who like the idea of making their own clothing but are a little nervous about getting started, or who would rather sew socially! Denyse has even signed on as my Celebrity Assistant, and plans to make cookies for us. This should be very fun. Sign up quick, there is only one session on the schedule and class size is limited!

I have one other weekend workshop in the works, but am still finalizing dates and logistics. Blueberry Hill Inn in Goshen, Vermont was the site for both my wedding and much of the photography for Weekend Sewing, and was nice enough to offer to host a weekend sewing workshop for WS readers. This is such an incredible place, I would love to bring a bunch of crafty ladies up there for a few days of sewing, good eating, and a hike to a hidden swimming lake if the weather allows. If you are interested, shoot me an email and I can get you more details as they develop.

Oh, and if you are in New York City on Thursday, April 30, come say hello at The City Quilter in Chelsea, where I will be giving a demonstration on my creative process and about designing fabric in Adobe Photoshop, as well as signing some books. Seating is limited, so advance registration is required.

For more details on these and other workshops and events, please visit my new "Workshops" page, which (I know, I already said this, but I do tend to go on and can't assume everyone reads every long winded rant I come up with) will take up a permanent residence here on Weekend.

a "muslin" in class before attempting to make the finished wool cape. $150.00

Building a Modern Trousseau, By Hand and By Collecting

I have just added a new class to the fall schedule over at Patchwork, the sweetest little fabric shop in Soho. Titled Modern Trousseau, this class will cover the basic embroidery stitches and techniques needed to embellish linens with your very own monogram. Templates for vintage and original monogram designs from my own library will be made available, but I encourage participants to bring in their own tears, ideas, sketches, and samples and love helping to develop custom insignias. The class will be held in three sessions: October 1st, 8th, and 15th, from 7:15-9:15. Call 212 420-8798 to register.

This is my own monogram, and an example of what will be covered in this class.  I wanted something non-traditional that would work with my table setting (below), which is a combination of my wedding china, Villeroy & Boch's "Wonderful World", plus random vintage finds that have something involving butterflies and insects, like the hand-painted Limoges plate below. The Wonderful World stuff is discontinued, so I stocked up on a bunch of different colors that mix and match nicely. Limoges Butterfly, on the other hand, is ridiculous. Its hand painted and fabulous and hard to find. It will likely take me a lifetime to collect a dozen or so pieces ( I am also obsessed with the gold rimmed tea cups, also by Limoges spotted on OH JOY, seen below), but oh, the thrill. orange wildflower-print fabric is from my "Lightning Bugs" line. I am newly obsessed with the torn, then frayed edges of these napkins, which is soooo easy to do.....

My favorite spot to look for Limoges online is the Atlanta Antique Gallery, where this recent listing for a beautiful tea set with honeybees in gold caught my eye.

The  next picture is of my husband, equally thrilled at the idea of spending the day combing Vermont second-hand stores. He was completely adorable when we picked out our china, unwaveringly supportive regarding my obsession with bugs and butterflies, but draws the line at antiquing and opts to catch up on some sleep in the car.  And I know what you are wondering: what is that car? Its the same getaway car from our wedding, compliments of our good friends Michael and Uli Belenky, who also happen to be the owners of everyones favorite baby clothing brand,  Zutano. Michael restored the car, the colors are custom, of course.
