I have big things in store for our annual sun-soaked creative fest in Palm Springs (five spots left, as of this writing) I am absolutely captivated at the moment by crewel embroidery, in part because of my discovery of the work of Erica Wilson, the artist behind the Owl pictured above. Think of crewel as big, loose, fast embroidery, stitches and yarns and needles so fat that someone could work a pillow as big as the back of their favorite chair with just about any design that they can manage to draw or transfer onto a piece of heavy linen. I’m actually working on a line of crewel kits myself, and will be introducing some of those designs and handing out some preview kits in Palm Springs. Since I’m technically still a novice, I’ve enlisted the incredible Marfa based Katherine Shaugnessy to come and share her vast crewel embroidery skills with us.
AND, in case you were looking for both the perfect getaway AND the perfect dress, we’ve got a very special sewing project in store for our palm Springs workshoppers too. I think I can even title it “the Perfect Dress”. Its a very versatile, wrap-and-tie, can’t-go- wrong, incredibly flattering and incredibly comfortable design by my friend the fashion designer, Mariann Boston Reh. Mariann will be in Palm Springs to walk us through the construction of this ingenious garment, and because our time in the sun is so short and sweet, we will be offering a fabric purchase and cutting service to our workshoppers, with no extra charge. Your bundle of (pre-selected and) pre-cut fabric will be waiting for you when you arrive at The Ace, all you’ll need to do is sew it up. This project is a great way to start thinking in new creative ways about garment sewing, and Mariann is just the person to learn from.
We’ll also be learning a bit about weaving.. I know, it’s going to be tough to work in that afternoon swim this year, but we have confidence in you.... if you want a spot, please let us know soon! You can register over here.
